Important Questions

Much of the research in climate modelling focuses on climate change:
  1. Is the globe warming, and if so, at what rate? (Detection)
  2. What factors are responsible for the warming? (Attribution)
    • Climate is known to vary over time, so the question is really whether observed change is consistent with historical change
  3. How will the climate change in the future? (Prediction)

Current Consensus

Supercomputing

Cartesian Reductionism

Holistic Simulation

Tetsuya Sato, The Earth Simulator: Roles and Impacts:
[Reductionism] is based on the idea that nature loves equilibrium ... that a natural system's conditions seldom move away from the equilibrium point ... [New] research has shown that since nature is an open system through which information, energy, material, and flow are always passing in and out, nature actually loves non-equilibrium, instability, and therefore, nonlinearity .... [The Earth Simulator provides] us with the mighty tool necessary for creating a new paradigm of non-equilibrium, nonlinearity, and openness. This enlightens us to go into new scientific realms.
Therefore, improvements in computational modeling are enabling a qualitative difference in the kinds of behaviour we can understand
